Dabei geht es nicht nur um die oben schon gestellte Frage an sich, sondern von erkenntnistheoretischer Seite auch darum, inwieweit die inneren Erlebnisse anderer Personen Gegenstand empirischer Forschung sein können, da es unmöglich ist, sie jemals unmittelbar zu verifizieren1 Unter welchen Umständen können unsere Erkenntnisse diesbezüglich als verlässlich bezeichnet werden? Welche Kriterien können wir dazu heranziehen? Wann wissen wir, ob unsere Erkenntnis wahr und gerechtfertigt ist? Die konsequente Folge dieser Haltung ist die Einsicht, dass Fremdpsychisches generell nicht zu erkennen ist, wie beispielsweise der erkenntnistheoretische Solipsismus (von lat. solus allein und ipse selbst: nur ich selbst oder das Selbst allein) behauptet. Radikalere Richtungen wie der ontologische Solipsismus vertreten sogar die Ansicht, dass es so etwas wie fremdes Bewusstsein gar nicht gebe. Nur das eigene Ich sei wirklich, die Außenwelt und andere fremde "Ichs" werden hier zu Bewusstseinsinhalten ohne eigene Existenz. Auch der philosophische Behaviorismus ist durch einen Verifikationismus gekennzeichnet, nach dem es schlicht sinnlos ist, unüberprüfbare Aussagen zu machen – used to be eben auch auf Aussagen über geistige Zustände zutrifft.
Die Philosophie des Geistes konzentriert sich hingegen mehr auf die Natur dieser mentalen Zustände und ihren Wirkungen und Ursachen. Neben die erkenntnistheoretischen Fragen nach der generellen Erkennbarkeit fremden Bewusstseins treten hier additionally sehr ontologische Fragen. Ganz besonders im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das Verhältnis von geistiger Verfassung und körperlichem Ausdruck. Da mentale Zustände nicht mit den Mitteln der Introspektion zu beschreiben sind (es muss ja sogar bezweifelt werden, dass es überhaupt so etwas wie ein geistiges Innenleben gibt!), liegt es nahe, sie – ganz in behavioristischer culture – als Verhaltensbeschreibungen oder -dispositionen zu betrachten.
Ein wichtiger Punkt innerhalb dieser Diskussion ist hierbei der subjektive Erlebnisgehalt dieser mentalen Zustände, oder vereinfacht ausgedrückt: Wie fühlen sich diese für den Anderen an? (...)
